Simple Home Improvements that Make a Big Impact

Simple Home Improvements that Make a BIG Impact

  1.  Ring Doorbell:  If you don’t have a Ring doorbell yet, join the club!  They are easy to install and add so much value for the small price tag.  We love being able to open up our Ring app and look at the camera footage in a matter of seconds.  This is great for security.  We also love the community aspect of Ring.  We’re in the know about what’s going on in the neighborhood.

2.  Sengled Floodlight Camera: We love our Sengled floodlight camera for similar reasons as the Ring.  Having an extra layer of security is priceless.  We are so happy we upgraded the floodlights over our garage with the Sengled floodlight cameras.  The installation was as simple as unscrewing the old lightbulb and screwing in the Sengled! It was literally as easy as screwing in a lightbulb. It adds camera coverage to areas our Ring can’t see.  Not to mention areas that we want monitored (like our driveway and cars!).  The camera in the Sengled Floodlight is discrete, which we like!  Just like the Ring, the Sengled also has the ability to talk through the lightbulb to anyone who is outside.

3.  New Mailbox: Upgrading your mailbox is a simple home improvement project you can do that can totally improve and change the look of your house!  We changed out our falling apart country style mailbox for a modern one.  For a better selection of mailboxes (and more unique options), check out Etsy over the big-box stores.

4.  New House Numbers: Similar to the mailbox, adding bigger, bold new house numbers to your house can make a huge impact.  Again, we recommend getting these from Etsy over a big-box store!  We got our modern house numbers from this Etsy shop and can attest to the quality.

5.  Widen Driveway: Do you have a too-narrow driveway?  This seems to be a problem in our neighborhood.  The cars fit (just barely), but when you step out, there’s simply not enough driveway.  You’re either in the grass or in the plants.  This was a problem we had but since fixed – and we’re glad we did!  Widening the driveway is such a little thing that makes a huge difference.  Every time we pull in the driveway and get out of the car, we’re grateful we did this project.   Now this project was outside our wheelhouse, so we did have to hire someone to do this for us.  This is the most expensive and complicated home improvement project on this list, but it was worth every penny!  We opted to widen our driveway with brick pavers, so not only did it add functionality to our space, but also some style!

6.  New Light Fixtures: Replacing light fixtures can dramatically change the mood and style of any room.  We’ve changed out the light fixtures in several rooms in our house.  You can get stylish light fixtures from IKEA or Target for as little as $100 and they all come with simple step by step installation instructions that almost anybody can do.  It’s money well spent in our eyes, as we get enjoyment out of them every day!

7.  Hue Lights: In conjunction with new light fixtures, consider replacing your normal lightbulbs with hue lightbulbs.  Lighting makes such a big impact in a room.  We connected our hue lights with our Google Home, which makes turning on/off the lights or changing the color of the lights super easy.  The various light settings can improve your mood by helping you relax or even act as alarms by turning flashing or turning on/off while cooking.  You will be surprised how many times you use the various functions and wonder why you didn’t get them sooner.

8. Automatic FlushersWe love futuristic gizmos and gadgets, especially when it comes to our home.  We installed automatic toilet flushers.  It was a super simple DIY project that we reap the benefits of every time we go to the bathroom.  Simply wave your hand over the back of the toilet to flush.  For the germ-conscious, this is a must-have (makes a great gift!).

9. Bidet:  We jumped on the bidet wagon in 2020 and will never look back.  Wish we did it sooner!  We find using a bidet to be a luxurious experience – plus we love that they’re considered to be eco-friendly (they use more water, but less toilet paper).  We got one of the cheaper ones we could find from Target (this one) and are very happy with it!  We plan to install bidets on the other toilets in our house.

10. Peel and Stick Wallpaper:  Peel and stick wallpaper is the easier and cheaper alternative to traditional wallpaper.  We ordered some from Target and took on this project.  Was it the easiest home improvement project we ever did?  No.  But we would do it again.  We picked a pretty forgiving print which is what we would recommend, especially for beginner DIYers.  Peel and stick wallpaper takes an accent wall to the next level.

Which project will you be trying next?  Thanks for reading!
