Hello Bello is the newest baby care line, boasting clean and safe ingredients. But are their products really as safe as you think they are? Are the diapers truly safe and non-toxic? What about the wipes?
The premise of the Hello Bello brand, founded by Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, is that safe baby products should be affordable and accessible by all. The “affordable, plant-based” products were originally sold exclusively at Wal-Mart (as well as on the Hello Bello website). Now they can even be found on Amazon.

The marketing tagline most associated with the Hello Bello brand is “Premium, Plant-Based Products for All“.

Just like with any brand, you can’t take a company’s broad statements on ingredients for face value. Any company can legally use labels like “safe” and “non-toxic” to describe their products, as there are no regulations on this verbiage.
I am very happy that these diapers don’t contain parabens or phthalates. But I wanted to take a closer look at the ingredients to see if they truly are a safe, non-toxic brand.
I will focus on Hello Bello’s diapers and wipes, as these are the two items from the line that represent the largest and most recurring costs for parents.

Hello Bello Diapers | Are They Safe?
The verdict is still out.
But for now, it’s a no from me.
Unfortunately, by law diaper manufacturers are not required to disclose what materials and ingredients are used in their diapers. At this point, Hello Bello has yet to release their diaper ingredients.
Hello Bello states on their website “You’ll find a detailed ingredient list on every product page,” but this is simply not true.
There is no ingredient list for their diapers listed yet online or on the diaper packaging itself.
In reaching out to the company, Hello Bello states that they are currently awaiting a full ingredient list from their supplier.
They do seem willing to provide the full ingredients to consumers once they receive it.
It does seem a bit odd to me that Hello Bello doesn’t have an ingredients list, yet heavily promotes their clean and safe ingredients. But perhaps they’ve set parameters with their suppliers on what clean and safe ingredients are allowed, and they are just finalizing which ones are being used?
I am eager to see the list of full ingredients once they are released. But until then, the verdict is still out on just how clean and safe the diaper ingredients are.
I personally am going to hold off on purchasing until I can find out more.
Bottom-Line: Diaper brands that don’t disclose their ingredients are a no-go in my book. Plain and simple.
Hello Bello Wipes | Are They Safe?
Yes.
Unlike with their diapers, Hello Bello does disclose what ingredients are used in their wipes.
It states on the Hello Bello website that the wipes are “Made with 99%+ pure water with a touch of organic aloe and a wee bit of chamomile extract.”
The full ingredient list is as follows:
- Water (Aqua)
- Gluconolactone
- Sodium Benzoate
- Hydroxyacetophenone
- Aloe Vera Extract*
- Chamomile Extract*
- Decyl Glucoside
- Polyaminopropyl biguanide
- Ethylhexylglycerin
*denotes Organic
Below are the ratings given by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) for each of the ingredients. EWG rates ingredients from 1-10, with 1 being a low hazard and 10 being a high hazard.
- Water (Aqua)
- Gluconolactone – 1
- Sodium Benzoate – 3
- Hydroxyacetophenone – 1
- Aloe Vera Extract* – 1-3
- Chamomile Extract* – 1
- Decyl Glucoside – 1
- Polyaminopropyl biguanide – 1
- Ethylhexylglycerin – 1
Thanks to a reader, who sent this scientific article about Polyaminopropyl Biguanide to me. It states that the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) found the use of Polyaminopropyl Biguanide as a preservative in all cosmetic products at concentrations up to 0.1% to be safe. However, the EU has placed this substance as a carcinogen Category 2 (which means suspected human carcinogen). Despite this, it’s still permitted to be used is cosmetic purposes when the SCCS deems it to be safe.
Denmark has actually banned this ingredient from personal care products based on the EU’s classification as a Category 2 carcinogen.
Bottom-line: I would use the Hello Bello wipes on my child in a pinch, but it’s definitely not my first choice.
