Does Maxi-Cosi Use Flame Retardants?

Do Maxo-Cosi Use Flame Retardants?

Flame retardants are toxic chemicals that are linked to thyroid disruption, memory and learning problems, delayed mental and physical development, lower IQ, advanced puberty, hormone disruption and reduced fertility.

As scientists are learning more about the negative impacts flame retardants have on our health and the environment, conscious consumers are looking for car seats, strollers and other baby gear that don’t contain flame retardants.

Flame retardants are commonly and historically found in car seats.  This is because car seats are required to pass a federal flammability requirement (FMVSS 302).  However, flame retardants in car seats are no longer as commonplace as they once have been.  With consumers asking for car seats without chemical flame retardants, some car seat manufacturers are starting to listen.  Many car seat manufacturers have found alternate ways to meet the flammability standards without the use of chemical flame retardants.  One common way this is done is by using naturally fire resistant fabrics like wool.

Chemical flame retardants can also be found in strollers, but it’s less likely.

Yes, Maxi-Cosi uses flame retardants.  However, only on some of their products, not all.  Keep reading for more details.

Do Maxi-Cosi Strollers Have Flame Retardants?

No, Maxi-Cosi strollers do not contain flame retardants.  We reached out to Maxi-Cosi, who responded:

“We can confirm that no chemicals are used in the fabrics of our products and the material used is mainly made from polyester and is woven multiple times to provide an effective solution to being fire retardant.

We can also confirm that the wheels are made from rubber, and again have not been treated with any fire retardant chemicals.”

Do Maxi-Cosi Car Seats Have Flame Retardants?

Most Maxi-Cosi car seats do contain flame retardants, with one exception.

The only Maxi-Cosi car seat that doesn’t contain flame retardants is the Maxi-Cosi Mico Max Plus infant car seat in the color Onyx Bliss.  Note that all the other colors of the Mico Max Plus do contain chemical flame retardants.

The Onyx Bliss fabric is a wool-free fabric that contains no chemical flame retardants. Maxi-Cosi calls this flame-retardant free fabric “PureCosi”.  The Pure Cosi fabric is easily removable with no need to unthread the harness and is both machine washable and dryer safe.

Maxi-Cosi used to have a convertible car seat in the same chemical free flame-retardant fabric, but has since discontinued it unfortunately – the Magellan Max convertible car seat.

Do Maxi-Cosi Products Have PFAS?

Another chemical of concern in baby products is a group of chemicals referred to as PFAS.

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are a group of chemicals often used in baby gear to make products stain and water-resistant.  PFAS is a known health and environmental concern.

Luckily, the one Maxi-Cosi car seat that doesn’t contain flame retardants also doesn’t contain PFAS.  The Mico Max Plus infant car seat in the color Onxy Bliss does not contain PFAS.

We reached out to Maxi-Cosi to inquire about the use of PFAS in their other car seats and strollers.  We have not received a response (we will update this article when we do).
