The Bugaboo Ant ranges from $499 to $569 depending on the color you choose.
The BabyZen Yoyo+ costs $499 for the 6 month and up version. If you want to use the stroller for a child under 6 months old, you have to buy the newborn attachment, which costs $225. This brings the total to $724.
Both are also compatible with certain car seats (more on that later), but require the purchase of car seat adapters.
Winner: It depends. If you need a stroller from birth (without attaching a car seat), the Bugaboo Ant is the cheaper option. However, if you have a child 6 months and up, the two are tied (assuming you choose the cheapest colors…more on that below)
Design Options?
Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and the Bugaboo Ant start at $499, but have more expensive options based on the design/color.
"Base" Color/Design Options
BabyZen Yoyo+ offers the following design options at the $499 price point:
First, you can either pick from the black or white frame. Then you have the following color options (from left to right): Grey, Black, Peppermint, Red, Ginger, Taupe, or Toffee. That’s a total of 14 different options at the base ($499) price!
The color options are much more limited for the Bugaboo Ant at the same price point. The options are Steel Blue, Black or Neon Red, all with an aluminum frame. That’s only 3 different options at the base price.
"Premium" Color/Design Options
The “premium” option for the BabyZen Yoyo+ stroller is “Air France Blue” and costs $25 more than the standard option for a total of $524. You can choose between the black frame and white frame (both are the same price).
The Bugaboo Ant has more “premium” options, but for a price. The various options are summarized in the chart below below:
The Bugaboo Ant has two premium fabric color options, Grey Melange and Pink Melange. This costs $20 more than the base model. One important thing to note is that with this upgrade, you’re also getting an extendable UPF50+ canopy with a peek-a-boo window. This feature is not included in the base model.
Another premium option you can pay extra for is a black frame. This will cost you $50 more.
Winner: BabyZen Yoyo+The BabyZen Yoyo+ has significantly more design options than the Bugaboo Ant (and at no extra cost!).
Easier to Fold?
There are fewer steps to fold the BabyZen Yoyo+ compared to the Bugaboo Ant. The BabZen Yoyo+ folds in 3 steps, while the Bugaboo Ant takes a few more. Neither are too difficult though.
Winner: The BabyZen Yoyo+
Weighs Less?
The BabyZen Yoyo+ weights 13.6 pounds while the Bugaboo Ant weighs 15.8 pounds. This is a 2.2 pound difference.
Winner: The BabyZen Yoyo+
Easier to Carry?
The BabyZen Yoyo+ has a built in carry strap that is used to carry the stroller over your shoulder, while the Bugaboo Ant is meant to be rolled behind you similar to wheeled luggage. Both can also be carried by hand.
Winner: The Bugaboo Ant
More Compact?
When folded the BabyZen Yoyo+ dimensions are 20 L x 17 x W x 7 H inches vs. the Bugaboo Ant dimensions of 21.6 L x 14.9 W x 9.1 H inches. So when folded the Yoyo+ is slightly shorter in length and in height, but slightly wider than the Ant.
Winner: Tied
Better for Flying?
Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and Bugaboo Ant have boast that they can be carried on *most* airplanes as carryon-on luggage, with the caveat that you should check with your specific airline before flying.
BabyZen states on their website “Since 2012, the YOYO and YOYO+ strollers (folded dimensions 52 x 44 x 18 cm) are accepted or recognized as cabin luggage by most airlines companies. However, cabin luggage standards may vary according to the airline and we therefore recommend checking with your chosen airline before travelling for the latest applicable cabin luggage allowance.“
Bugaboo states on their website: “The Bugaboo Ant fits within IATA standard, in most compact fold (23 cm x 38 x 55). This standard is used by most airlines for sizes of cabin luggage. However, cabin luggage standards may vary according to the airline and we therefore recommend checking with your chosen airline before travelling.“
Winner: Tied Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and Bugaboo Ant can be brought on most airlines as a carry-on.
Better for Multiple Children?
If you have two children, both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and Bugaboo Ant have similar options for having them ride along.
Both are sold for $125 and both offer a sit or stand option.
Here’s a side-by-side of the Bugaboo Comfort Wheeled Board vs. the BabyZen Yoyo+ Board:
Winner: Tied
Better for a Baby?
As previously mentioned, the BabyZen Yoyo+ can’t be used for babies under 6 months unless you purchase the newborn pack separately ($225).
The Bugaboo Ant on the other hand can be used from birth, as it lays flat. Both strollers also have an option to be used with car seats if you buy separate car seat adapters.
Winner: Bugaboo Ant
Compatible with Car Seats?
Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and Bugaboo Ant are compatible with certain car seats when you buy the car seat adapters separately. However, in order to fold, the car seat adapters must be removed for both strollers.
The BabyZen Yoyo+ car seat adapter will set you back $50 while the Bugaboo Ant car seat adapters are comparable at $44.95.
The following car seats are compatible with the BabyZen Yoyo+:
The BabyZen Yoyo+ will not work with the Cybex Cloud Q
Maxi-Cosi: Micro
Nuna: Pipa, Pipa Lite, Pipa Lite LX
The following car seats are compatible with the Bugaboo Ant:
Cybex : Aton Q, Aton Q I-size, M, M I-size, 2, 5
Maxi-Cosi : Pebble, Pebble plus, Rock.
Nuna : Pipa Lite, Pipa Lite LX
The Bugaboo Ant will not work with the Nuna Pipa or Bugaboo Turtle by Pipa
Winner: Tied Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and the Bugaboo Ant are compatible with a nice selection of car seats. If this factor is important to you, the one you pick will be dependent on what infant car seat you have.
Better for Older Children?
The BabyZen Yoyo+ can hold a child with a maximum weight of 40 pounds, while the Bugaboo Ant has a weight capacity of 50 pounds. Additionally, the Bugaboo Ant can accommodate taller children with a seat height of 15 inches that is adjustable up to 22 inches. The seat height of the BabyZen Yoyo+ is 17 inches.
Winner: Bugaboo Ant
Better for Europe?
If you’re planning a European vacation and want to bring along a stroller, you should note that the cobblestone streets and bumpy sidewalks can make maneuvering with a stroller challenging at times. Combine this with lots of stairs (very few elevators/escalators), and you can see why Europe (as well as many destinations abroad) aren’t considered “stroller friendly”.
However, both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and Bugaboo Ant are narrow and light which will make maneuvering through Europe with a stroller much easier.
But how do they handle on the cobblestone streets?
Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and the Bugaboo Ant have all-wheel suspension.
The BabyZen YoYo+ wheels measure 5.3″, while the Bugaboo Ant wheels measure 5″ in the front and 6″ in the back.
Winner: Bugaboo Ant It’s a close call, but the Bugaboo Ant has rear wheels an inch larger than the BabyZen Yoyo+, making it easier to push on bumpy terrain (and offer a smoother ride for baby).
Adjustable Handle Bar?
The BabyZen Yoyo+ handle bar is not adjustable, while the Bugaboo Ant handle bar is adjustable. The BabyZen Yoyo+ handlebar sits 41.7 inches from the ground. The Bugaboo Ant has an adjustable handlebar and can be set to two positions: 37.4 inches or 40.9 inches off the ground.
Winner: Bugaboo Ant The handlebar of the BabyZen Yoyo+ is taller than the Bugaboo Ant handlebar at it’s highest position, but the Bugaboo Ant’s handlebar is adjustable.
Reversible, Rear Facing Seat?
The BabyZen Yoyo+ only has a forward facing seat. The exception is if you buy the newborn attachment, which rear faces. The stroller seat (6 months+) is reversible. The Bugaboo Ant has a reversible seat that can rear face.
Winner: Bugaboo Ant
Reclining Features?
The BabyZen Yoyo+ boasts a multi position reclining seat, as it is adjusted using a horizontal strap behind the seat. However, the BabyZen Yoyo+ seat doesn’t fully recline flat, nor sit fully upright in its most upright position.
Unlike the BabyZen Yoyo+, the Bugaboo Ant’s seat can sit more upright and also fully recline. However, in order to lay fully flat, the Bugaboo Ant must be rear facing (facing the adult). When rear facing, the Bugaboo Ant has three seat positions: fully upright, “relaxed,” and flat. When forward facing, the Bugaboo Ant only has two positions: fully upright and relaxed.
Winner: Bugaboo Ant Even though the Bugaboo Ant only reclines flat when the seat is rear facing, this is still better than the BabyZen Yoyo+ which doesn’t have that option at all. The Bugaboo Ant also has a more upright seat position.
BabyZen Yoyo+ vs. Bugaboo Ant | The Verdict:
Both the BabyZen Yoyo+ and Bugaboo Ant are solid options when it comes to a travel stroller. You may be swayed one direction or another based on what factors are important to you.
I personally can’t wait to get the Bugaboo Ant, as I love the ability to wheel the folded stroller behind me instead of having to carry it.
