The Nuna Demi Grow double stroller is a very competitive yet unique double stroller that competes against all of the best luxury double strollers on the market. We will explore the benefits and features of this top-of-the-line double stroller and help you understand if the Nuna double stroller is the ideal choice for your family.
Double strollers always seem to have a bit of an awkward design to them when compared to their single stroller counterparts. The Nuna Demi Grow double stroller is no exception. It has the same basic silhouette as the rest of the Nuna stroller lineup when in single stroller form. The main design difference when only one seat is installed, is the visible height of the seat from the frame of the stroller. To ultimately accommodate a double stroller configuration many double strollers raise the primary seat to allow room on the frame for that second seat. Other than that small detail, the Nuna double stroller essentially looks like a single stroller when the additional seat isn’t there.
When the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller has both seats installed, of course the design is very different from that of any Nuna single stroller. Not only does the Demi grow look different than any other Nuna product, it looks different than most other double strollers.
When the second seat is installed in addition to the primary seat, the second seat essentially ends up looking like it’s just sitting in the lower basket. This is pretty much because it is. Unlike other double strollers, the Nuna’s second seat consumes the space of the lower storage basket. From a design standpoint this looks a bit strange having a child mounted so low to the ground. From the perspective of function, many users see it as a good design.
Aside from reducing basket space many users appreciate the effect it has on maneuverability of the double stroller. The Nuna Demi Grow in double stroller configuration has a lowered center of gravity that adds to the feeling of safety and stability as well as make the stroller easier to push over various surfaces.
Nuna designed their double stroller to be fashionable, functional and durable like all of their other products. The Demi Grow is covered in fabric that feels very soft and high quality to the touch. The material used on the included Classic Canopy is also water resistant to protect the little ones from the rain soaking through.
The Nuna Demi Grow is currently available in four fabric color options. Like most strollers, the aluminum frame remains the same color no matter overall color selection. The current colors for the Nuna Demi Grow are Caviar (Black), Hazelwood (Tan), Ocean (very dark blue) and Refined (gray). The colors available for the double stroller are pretty much a selection of Nuna’s more traditional colors. Many strollers that Nuna sells have fewer color options like the Triv and Pepp, while the Mixx Next has the widest color palette (9 colors!). So with 4 upscale colors to choose from we think you can definitely find something that fits your style.
One interesting aspect of the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller’s color palette is the color of the vegan leather handlebar and armbar. Both of those items come in a brown color on all color selections except if you opt for Ocean. If you want your Nuna double stroller in Ocean then the handlebar and arm bar leather change to black.
Overall there is nothing to really complain about the colors or build quality of the stroller. Of course, the ability to have even more fabric colors to choose from or mix and match the handlebar and arm bar colors would be nice but the current selection is good enough for us.
The build quality is on par with the best high end strollers on the market. It rolls smoothly and relatively effortlessly even with double seats installed and occupied and never feels as if it is top heavy or tipsy. There are no creaks, squeaks or rattles even over uneven surfaces and it feels well put together.
The overall size of the Nuna Demi Grow in double stroller configuration is something that we can appreciate. Double strollers are usually quite large and their size becomes easily noticed in tighter spaces like stores or areas crowded with people like outdoor markets and amusement parks. This Nuna double stroller handles its size very well and doesn’t feel like the behemoth many other doubles strollers do.
One reason the Nuna has this relatively compact feeling when in double stroller configuration is because the footprint doesn’t really change when the second seat is added. The intelligent yet unique positioning of the lower seat on the chassis means that the stroller doesn’t need to gain much physical length when used as a double stroller compared to the single seat configuration. So, that odd Nuna double stroller design characteristic we described earlier actually seems to have a practical use in the real world.
As far as compactness when folded, the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller has folded dimensions of L 23.5” x W 24” x H 35” which puts it in the same ballpark as competitors like the Uppababy Vista V2 and Mockingbird Double stroller.
With the seats removed the Nuna weighs in at 27.4 pounds in the lightest form. Nuna gets to this weight by removing the winter seat, canopy and arm bar. With those items we would expect a weight around 30 pounds. The total weight when the second seat is installed grows to over 35 pounds which does make it a bit heavy when compared to its peers like the Uppababy Vista V2 (32.6 pounds) and the Mockingbird Double stroller (35 pounds even).
We attribute this weight to the additional strength required to allow the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller to accommodate a larger 50 pound weight limit per seat. The Vista V2 has a second seat limit of only 35 pounds and the Mockingbird has a 45 pound second seat limit. The weight that really matters most for most people in our opinion is the folded weight with seats removed since that’s the configuration the majority of people would use when loading and unloading to and from the trunk of their car.
As far as seating configurations go Nuna has counted a total of 23 different possible “modes” for the double stroller in double and single seat configurations. It is pretty versatile in that respect with the 23 configurations including combinations with the car seat, bassinet and toddler seat.
One thing that is nice is that the Nuna Demi Grow comes with two canopies out of the box so you can configure the double stroller appropriately for the climate you use it in. It comes with the “Classic Canopy” which we call the winter canopy, and the “Aire Protect Canopy” as the summer canopy.
The Aire Protect Canopy is made of lighter material and offers better ventilation than the standard Classic Canopy. The Aire Protect Canopy also contains a very useful built-in magnetic mosquito net that conveniently unzips from the Nuna’s canopy itself and provides full coverage against mosquitos. Usually we don’t like when strollers or other products come with additional unwanted accessories that are included in the already high price. We think that in the case of the Nuna Demi Grow, nearly everyone will make use out of these canopies no matter where in the country you live. The real trick will be if they create a single canopy that has the features of both!
One last favorite feature related to the winter/summer canopy setup is the “All-season Seat” the standard seat of the Nuna double stroller has a cozy cushioned winter seat setup and when the extra cushioning is removed the seat is turned into a summer seat with a fully mesh back. The fully mesh back not only reduces stroller weight but also provides massive amounts of airflow which can make a huge difference in areas that get really hot in the summer. The mesh itself provides a fair amount of bounce and cushion so the seat doesn’t feel any less comfortable. This seat along with the canopy setup nearly provides a totally different stroller experience for the passenger.
We know one potential downside of the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller setup is that when configured as a double stroller there is limited storage space. This can be a make or break issue for people who may want to or are already used to using a large under stroller basket to carry items. We really wish Nuna engineered a solution to the lack of storage of their double stroller. As far as options go, Nuna doesn’t currently have any sort or additional accessory to purchase that can add any sort of storage to the Demi Grow when in double stroller configuration.
This reminds us of the common issue with three row SUV’s. The car manufacturer brags about having plenty of room for 7 passengers in a seemingly small midsize vehicle. Then you open the trunk with the third row up and there is hardly any room for a purse because that third row occupies the entire trunk. That is part of the sacrifice you have to live with in this relatively compact easy to maneuver double stroller. If you want plenty of cargo space AND room for more passengers at the same time, you are going to have to look at a larger vehicle.
As we have touched on before, the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller is known to be one of the best handling strollers on the market when fully configured. In double stroller configuration it has one of the lowest center of gravity’s of any stroller making it handle like a Lotus Elise in a sea of Suburbans on the playground. With the second seat installed the weight isn’t just low on the chassis but it’s also away from the front wheels which help immensely with turn in response. Because of the Nuna Demi Grows weight distribution as a double stroller, it handles beautifully!
The ride is also very good in either configuration over rough terrain due to the stroller’s suspension system. Nuna calls their suspension system “Custom Dual Suspension”. Details are slim on the technical side of what really makes the “Custom Dual Suspension” system an engineering feat but we can assure you it helps a lot with offroad maneuverability. It is comparable to any other stroller with a full suspension setup on uneven surfaces.
The Nuna Demi Grow double stroller has several small features we think go a long way when it comes to usability for the parents. We love the magnetic buckle on the child seats! Nuna calls this the “MagneTech Secure Snap” and it helps solve the issue of frustrating and hard to snap and align buckles and straps. The Nuna Demi Grow buckle system uses magnets to help guide the straps into the correct position to easily and securely snap together. In our opinion, any improvement of the buckle system is a step in the right direction.
We are also fans of the many adjustments of the double stroller designed to be operated one handed. The seat calf support, seat recline, canopy extend/retract, and the swinging open of the arm bar are all one hand operations that require minimum effort to execute.
The Nuna Demi Grow double stroller is a strong competitor to the Mockingbird Double and Uppababy Vista. It is definitely different in its design and execution but we think that the differences are ultimately well thought out and not different for the sake of being different. We love the superb handling characteristics and lower center of gravity along with the many one handed operations the stroller is capable of.
The smaller overall size of the Nuna in double stroller configuration, along with the sacrifices of storage can be a deal breaker to some. We understand that but also see the advantages of navigating a true double stroller in crowded areas that doesn’t feel like a top heavy stretch limo. Ultimately, the Nuna Demi Grow double stroller is a great stroller for many families but not a one size fits all solution for everyone. It definitely has its pluses and minuses as a double stroller but it still ranks near the top of our favorite list!
