IKEA has tons of great items that are Montessori aligned or that would work well in a Montessori home environement. We reviewed all of Ikea’s newest products for 2020 and picked out some of our favorites. If you see something you like, hurry to your closest Ikea because many of these items are seasonal or limited-time only!
P.S. Since the time of this article, IKEA came out with even more goodies – for both Fall and Winter. Check them out here:
OSTBIT Serving Tong: This tong is made of bamboo and is perfect transferring activities. Even better, it only costs 99 cents!
BERÄKNA Vase: This small, clear vase is great for arranging flowers (a traditional Montessori activity). We like that the vase is clear so children can see the flower stems and water levels. Only $2.99
GRÄSMARÖ Gardening Tool Set: This gardening set has been making an appearance at IKEA the past couple of years every spring – just in a new color. This year’s color is turquoise! These tools are perfectly-sized for children’s hands. Gardening is a Montessori activity.
SOKER Watering Can: We like this new watering can from Ikea because it makes it harder to accidentally drown plants (lots of little holes instead of one big spout). This will give little hands the confidence they need as they learn this practical life skill. It also comes in pink!
FÖRENLIG Plant pot: Ikea has come out with lots of new plant pots for 2020. Tending to plants is a good Montessori practical life activity. Ikea surely has a plant pot for every aesthetic and budget. We love the FÖRENLIG collection. They’re made of recycled plastic and the smallest one is only 99 cents! This would be great for its intended purpose (holding a plant) or could be used to hold other supplies or materials.
RISATORP Basket: This basket could be used in a variety of ways in a Montessori environment. It can be used to carry or transport things, used for storage, or just for imaginative play. It comes in a variety of colors.
KVARNVIK storage baskets: These storage baskets would be perfect on a Montessori shelf without the lid. Then pop on the lid for easy storage!
KALASFINT Beverage Dispenser: Many Montessori families use a water dispenser similar to this one to set up a water station for their child. This allows them to independent and self-sufficient by filling their own water cup. This one is 3.2 quarts.
VARDAGEN Beverage Dispenser: Here is another water dispenser option. Though this one is slightly bigger (5.3 quarts), it also has an optional stand.
KNOPPÄNG Vegetable & Herb Garden Posters: For $10 each you get both of these posters featuring realistic images. Not only are these posters make great artwork, they can be used as an educational tool.
BAGIS Children Hangers: These kid-sized hangers are very much Montessori-aligned. Many Montessori families have their children’s clothing at their level so they can pick out their own clothes and get dressed independently (as able).
KLYFTA Bread Basket: To some this may look like a bread basket, but Montessori families can probably think of other ways to use this. We think this makes a perfect shelf tray!
GRILLTIDER Grill Tray: This stainless steel tray (meant for food) would make a great tray for a Montessori shelf. This is also a perfect Montessori tray for messier activities, like if working with ice or paint.
Various Large Baskets: Large baskets great to have in any home (not only Montessori!). They can be used for various things – to store larger toys, to store blankets, as a clothing hamper, etc. In 2020, Ikea came out with several new large baskets. Shown above are some of our favoities! We love that they are made from natural materials!
KALLAX: The Kallax cube shelf is a favorite in many Montessori homes. Placed length ways, the Kallax provides low, open shelves that are accessible to children. Ikea released a special, limited edition color – green shelving with white trim.
