Let’s take a look at the Mockingbird Single-to-Double vs. Evenflo Pivot Xpand!  The Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird Single-to-Double are comparable strollers that start as single strollers and can convert to a double stroller.  We’ll do an in-depth comparison of the Pivot Xpand vs. Mockingbird to see which one comes out on top.

Cheaper? Evenflo Pivot Xpand vs. Mockingbird Single-to-Double?

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand Modular stroller can be found at the lowest price via Evenflo’s official Amazon store.  This includes the single stroller (with 1 toddler seat and a parent cup holder).  To convert it to a double stroller, you must purchase the second toddler seat.

Evenflo also offers this stroller as part of a “travel system”.  Essentially, the only difference is that you also get a car seat bundled with the stroller.

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand Travel System is sold with either the LiteMax infant car seat (check price on Amazon HERE) or the more premium SecureMax infant car seat that includes SensorSafe (check price on Amazon HERE).

To make the Pivot Xpand travel system a double stroller you still need to purchase the 2nd toddler seat separately.  Many big box stores only sell the entire travel system but you can buy the Pivot Xpand without the car seat directly from Evenflo on Amazon.

The price of the Mockingbird “Single-to-Double” stroller is $450.  The second seat kit is an additional $145 bringing the total for the double stroller configuration to $595.

So to buy these two strollers in the double seat configuration, which is what most people are probably interested in, will typically cost more with Mockingbird.

Winner: Evenflo Pivot Xpand The Evenflo Pivot Xpand is typically sold at a lower price than the Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller when you factor in the purchase of second seats to convert them to double strollers.

Height Limit of Stroller Seat

In terms of the height limit for the primary seat (the toddler seat that comes with the stroller):

The toddler seat of the Evenflo Pivot Xpand can accommodate a child up to 38″ tall.

The toddler seat of the Mockingbird Single-to-Double can accommodate a child up to  42″ tall

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double The primary seat of the Mockingbird double stroller can accommodate a taller child.

Weight Limit of Stroller Seat?

The toddler seat of the Evenflo Pivot Xpand can accommodate a child up to 55 pounds.

The toddler seat of the Mockingbird Single-to-Double can accommodate a child up to 45 pounds.

Winner:  Evenflo Pivot Xpand The primary seat of the Pivot Xpand can hold a heavier child than the primary seat of the Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller.

Height & Weight Limit of Second Seat?

The second seat for the Evenflo Pivot Xpand has a weight limit of 55 pounds.  The maximum height limit for the second seat is 38″.  This is the same as the primary/main seat.

The second seat for the Mockingbird is the same as the main seat.  The second seat has a weight limit of 45 pounds and a height limit of 42″

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double The second seat of the Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller can hold a taller child than the second seat of the Evenflo Pivot Xpand.  Although the Pivot Xpand second seat can hold more weight, it is not necessarily better.  It’s unlikely a child will approach the 55 lb weight limit before exceeding the seats height limit.

Fits a Third Child with a Stroller Board? Evenflo Pivot Xpand vs. Mockingbird

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller can accommodate a third child with additional attachments.

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand has a stroller board you can purchase separately on Amazon that allows a third child to ride along.  This is called the Stroller Rider Board.  It snaps into place and allows a child to stand between the stroller and the parent.

Mockingbird sells their own Riding Board on their website.

The following two universal boards are also Mockingbird compatible:  Lascal BuggyBoard Maxi & Guzzie+Gus Universal Hitch.

Winner:  Tied Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and the Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller can accommodate a third child on a ride-along board (purchased separately).

  • Sabino Gray: A modern grey-colored seat and canopy
  • Ayrshire Black: A black colored seat and canopy that matches the rest of the stroller

  • Moonstone Grey/Black: A light grey and black colored stroller seat and car seat.
  • Onyx Black: A dark black overall color theme.

The Evenflo website has two additional colors for the Pivot Xpand Travel System with the SecureMax car seat:

  • Opal Pink: A light pink
  • Sapphire Blue: A bright blue

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double Stroller The Mockingbird has many more color options for its stroller than the Evenflo Pivot Xpand.

More Customizable?

Mockingbird offers 4 color options, but they have even more design options.  You can customize your stroller in many ways that you can’t with the Evenflo Pivot Xpand.

With Mockingbird, you get to select the stroller color, the leather color and the pattern on the inside of the stroller canopy.  The current options are as follows:

Canopy color:

  • Black
  • Sea
  • Sky
  • Bloom
  • Sage
  • Light Grey (limited edition)
  • Forest (limited edition)

Interior of the Canopy:

  • Windowpane
  • Watercolor Drops
  • Night Stars (limited edition)

Frame/Leather combination:

  • Silver Frame/Penny Leather
  • Silver Frame/Black Leather

With the Pivot Xpand, the stroller color, frame color and handle color come as a single package.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double The Mockingbird double stroller is customizable whereas the Pivot Xpand is not.

Weighs Less?

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand weighs 28.2 pounds as a single seater.  As a double, it weighs 34.6 pounds.

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double weighs 26.5 pounds as a single seater.  As a double, it weighs 35 pounds.

Winner:  It Depends When configured as a single stroller, the Mockingbird weighs less than the Evenflo Pivot Xpand.  But when configured as a double stroller, the Pivot Xpand weighs slightly less.

More Compact?

Below are the Evenflo Pivot Xpand vs. Mockingbird Single-to-Double dimensions:

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand’s dimensions (with seat attached) are as follows:

Unfolded: 34″ L x 26.5″ W x 41.5″ H / Folded:  18.5″ L x 26.5″ W x 31.5″ H

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double’s dimensions (with seat attached) are as follows:

Unfolded: 33″ L x 25.5″ W x 40″ H / Folded:  18″ L x 25.5″ W x 34″ H

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double The Evenflo Pivot Xpand is slightly larger than the Mockingbird Single-to-Double in every dimension folded and unfolded except folded height.

Easier to Fold?

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand can be folded with both the main seat and second seat attached.

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller can be folded with both the main seat and secondary seat attached.  Both seats must be forward-facing.

When folded with both seats attached they are quite bulky and may not fit into the cargo area of your car without removing the additional seat.

In terms of how to fold the two strollers, the Pivot Xpand has a two-handed fold.  There are two slide release triggers on the frame of the stroller that need to be pulled on in order to collapse and fold the stroller.

Folding the Evenflo Pivot Xpand
Folding the Evenflo Pivot Xpand

The Mockingbird double stroller has a one-handed fold.  There is a lever in the center of handlebar that needs squeezed  in order to collapse and fold the stroller.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double The Mockingbird double stroller is easier to fold than the Evenflo Pivot Xpand.  The one handed folding ability can make a large difference when juggling multiple items and you don’t have two free hands.

Stands When Folded?

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller stand when folded.

Winner:  Tied

Smoother Ride?

Suspension

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand has suspension on the rear wheels only.

The Mockingbird double stroller has a “dual frame and seat suspension”.

Wheels

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand has foam-filled plastic tires that are approx. 7” in the front and 9” in the back.

The Mocking bird Single-to-Double stroller has polyurethane tires that are 7″ in the front and 9.5″ in the back.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double   The Mockingbird double stroller has multiple layers of suspension while the Evenflo Pivot Xpand only has suspension on the rear wheels.  The fact that the tires are made of polyurethane vs. plastic translates to a smoother ride as well.  Additionally, the slightly larger wheels in the back give the Mockingbird a slight edge.

Better Canopy?

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird double stroller have a pretty standard size canopy (before any extensions).  Both also have a covered mesh peek-a-boo window that also can help airflow.

We did find that the peek-a-boo window flap of the Pivot Xpand does not have a magnet to secure it closed while the Mockingbird does. The Mockingbird canopy is also UPF 50+ providing UV protection while the Evenflo Pivot Xpand canopy is not.  The Evenflo manual even clarifies to says “The canopy is not intended to provide UV protection”.

The Mockingbird canopy is also extendable for extra coverage while the Pivot Xpand canopy is not.  An extendable canopy is useful in providing an additional amount of shade and UV protection on sunny days. The small canopy size of the Evenflo Pivot Xpand is a common complaint for this stroller.

One thing to note is that Mockingbird also comes with a removable magnetic sunshade that can attach to the canopy to provide additional coverage.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double Mockingbird is the clear winner when it comes to the stroller with the better canopy!  The size of the canopy is much more substantial and it offers UV protection – a must have in our eyes!

Better Harness?

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and the Mockingbird Single-to-Double have a 5-point, no-rethread harness.

Winner:  Tied Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird Single-to-Double have a 5-point, no-rethread harness.

Better Storage Basket?

The weight capacity of the Evenflo Pivot Xpand basket is 10 pounds while the Mockingbird Single-to-Double is 25 pounds.

The Pivot Xpand has a basket that expands to over 2 feet in length.  It is not removable.

The Mockingbird storage basket can be removed.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double The Mockingbird Single-to-Double basket can hold 15 pounds more than the Pivot Xpand basket.  That is a very significant difference in cargo weight so you don’t have to think twice about putting things in the basket.  We also like that it’s removable, which makes cleaning up much easier.

Better Foot Brake?

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird double stroller have a flip-flop friendly foot brake.

Winner:  Tied The “flip-flop friendly” brake is our favorite type of stroller brake. Both the Mockingbird and Evenflo Pivot Xpand have this type of brake.

Locking Front Wheels?

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird double stroller have pivoting front wheels.  However, only the Mockingbird Single-to-Double has locking front wheels.

Mockingbird Locking Front Wheels
The locking front wheels on the Mockingbird strollers

Winner:  Mockingbird SIngle-to-Double Locking front wheels is a feature we like that many may overlook when stroller shopping.  Locking front wheels is a feature often found in high-end strollers (like the UPPAbaby Vista).  Locking front wheels allows you to “lock” them which prevents them from swiveling.  This is beneficial when navigating on rougher terrain (like snow, brick, cobblestone, etc.).

Adjustable Handlebar?

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird double stroller have an adjustable handlebar.  Unlike some other strollers that have telescoping handlebar, both the Mockingbird Single-to-Double and Pivot Xpand handlebar adjust by rotating the handlebars via two buttons on the side.

The Pivot Xpand has 3 handlebar positions, while the Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller has 6 handlebar positions.

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand only has 3 handlebar positions

The height of the Evenflo Pivot Xpand handlebar is 33″ at the lowest setting and 44.7″ at the tallest setting.

The height of the Mockingbird Single-to-Double handlebar is 32″ at the lowest setting and 42″ at the tallest setting.

Winner:  It Depends The Evenflo Pivot Xpand has a taller handlebar setting (almost 3″ taller) than the Mockingbird.  However, we like that the Mockingbird has more settings, making it more likely to find a comfortable position.

Vegan?

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand has a black foam handlebar and no leather on any other surface of the stroller.

Although the Mockingbird double stroller refers to having a leather handlebar and bumper bar on their website, they clarified on their Instagram that this is not real leather, rather an “animal-free leatherette”.

Winner:  Tied  The Mockingbird Single-to-Double and Evenflo Pivot Xpand are both vegan.

Bassinet?

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand does not come with nor have a compatible bassinet.  However, the toddler seat can be converted into an infant bassinet.  The toddler seat can lay almost flat into what is called “infant mode”.  This allows you to use the stroller from birth to age 6 months (or when the child can’t sit up unassisted).

The Mockingbird stroller seat can also be laid flat and used for an infant ages 0-6 months with the purchase of the infant insert ($35).  Mockingbird also sells a separate Bassinet for $140 which can be attached to the Mockingbird stroller. The Bassinet can also be used in conjunction with the Mockingbird Bassinet Stand making it safe for sleep.

Try Before You Buy?

If you want to check out the Evenflo Pivot Xpand in person, you can head to a local store (Target, Buy Buy Baby, etc.) and take it for a spin.  However, one thing we noticed is that the Evenflo Pivot Xpand Travel System is more common in retailers – to buy just the Pivot Xpand, you have to buy it direct from the Evenflo website.

The Evenflo return policy dictates that you have 30 days to return any unused items purchased from the Evenflo website.  You will receive a full refund excluding any shipping costs.  Depending on which store you buy the Pivot Xpand from, there may be more lenient return policies.

As of August 2021, you can go to select Target stores to check out the Mockingbird Single-to-Double in person.  Prior to this, you could only purchase the Mockingbird strollers direct from their website.

Mockingbird also offers a 30-day trial program – simply order the stroller (from the Mockingbird website) and return it for free within 30 days if you don’t like it.  The purpose of the trial period is to open and use the stroller.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double  We like that you can physically see and touch both strollers before you buy it.  We also love the 30-day trial period offered by Mockingbird

No Flame Retardants?

We confirmed that the Mockingbird Single-to-Double stroller does not contain chemical flame retardants.

We were unable to verify if the Evenflo Pivot Xpand contains flame retardants.  We do know that if you purchase the Pivot Xpand Travel System, the car seat does contain chemical flame retardants (car seats have stringent flammability requirements compared to strollers, and only few car seats on the market meet these requirements without the use of chemical flame retardants).  On the website, Evenflo states the following in regards to the use of flame retardants:  “We meet the FMVSS 302 flammability standard, which provides limits on the type and amount of chemicals that can be used in flame retardants.”

Evenflo's Response in regards to Flame Retardants
Evenflo's Response in regards to Flame Retardants

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double We know Mockingbird strollers do not contain chemical flame retardants, while we don’t know the status for the Evenflo Pivot Xpand.  Mockingbird is much more transparent when it comes to information regarding flame retardants in their products which we appreciate.

Better Warranty?

Evenflo offers a 90 day warranty on the Pivot Xpand.

Mockingbird offers a lifetime warranty on their strollers.  Of course, with any warranty, make sure you read the fine print.

Winner:  Mockingbird Single-to-Double  The Mockingbird double stroller has a better warranty than the Pivot Xpand.

Evenflo Pivot Xpand vs. Mockingbird Double Stroller | Final Verdict

Both the Evenflo Pivot Xpand and Mockingbird Single-to-Double are similar stroller systems, but each has its pros and cons.

Overall, our top pick is the Mockingbird double stroller

Although the Evenflo Pivot Xpand is cheaper, you’re getting so much more with the Mockingbird.  To us, these differences are worth the slight price difference.  In fact, the Mockingbird stroller is often compared to the luxury, $1,000+ UPPAbaby Vista stroller (see our comparison here).

The Mockingbird Single-to-Double is better than the Evenflo in the following ways:

  1. More color options
  2. More customizable
  3. Accommodates a taller child (42″ in both seats)
  4. Weighs less
  5. Is more compact both folded & unfolded
  6. Easier to fold
  7. Smoother Ride
  8. Larger canopy with UV protection
  9. Storage basket can hold more weight
  10. Has locking front wheels
  11. More handlebar settings
  12. Has a bassinet (purchased separately)
  13. Compatible with more car seats (including our preferred brands like Nuna & UPPAbaby which have chemical flame retardant-free car seats)
  14. Able to verify it doesn’t contain flame retardants
  15. Better warranty
  16. 30-day trial period (if you buy direct from their website)

The Evenflo Pivot Xpand is better than the Mockingbird Single-to-Double in the following ways:

  1. Cheaper
  2. Able to accommodate an infant (age 0-6 months) out of the box without the purchase of additional accessories (“infant mode”)
  3. Taller handlebar setting
Ultimately, it’s up to each family to decide which stroller is best for them.  Hopefully this article highlighting some of the major differences will help make your decision easier!
