Here’s our review of the Naturepedic Cotton Classic 150 Coils Crib Mattress.
It was very important for us to choose a safe mattress. In fact, this was one of the top baby items where choosing a non-toxic version was non-negotiable. Babies spend a lot of time in such close proximity to their mattress. Most conventional mattresses contain harmful chemicals and ingredients. Naturepedic crib mattresses don’t have any questionable ingredients (like chemical flame retardants). They are made of organic cotton and GOTS certified.
We were sold on getting a Naturepedic crib mattress, but we didn’t really have a good understanding of the different crib options they offered (since then, we’ve put together a guide which explains the differences – see Naturepedic Crib Mattresses | Which One Should You Buy?).
Ultimately, our main driving force was price. We were buying (what we thought) was the cheapest Naturepedic crib mattress. More on this later.
Some of the features we noticed of the higher-priced Naturepedic cribs, like the ability to flip over the mattress to have a firmer side for toddlers (called 2-Stage), were not worth the higher price tag for our family.
Our Naturepedic Cotton Classic 150 Coils Crib Mattress has held up wonderfully. As of the date of this article, we’ve been using it for 16 months. For more context, our child has always been on the high end of the growth chart for height and on the low end for weight. We’ve used the mattress fairly frequently and consistently (most naps and most nights have been spent in the crib, up until 15 months where we started preschool 3x week).
When we purchased the mattress, most of the negative reviews we saw were related to the mattress sagging, but we haven’t experienced this at all.
There was also no “smell” when we first received and opened the mattress.
16 months later and our mattress is still like-new!
Our number one favorite thing about our Naturepedic crib mattress is the material it’s made out of.
Our second favorite thing about our Naturepedic crib mattress is the fact it’s waterproof. We’ve had quite a few “accidents” and they are a breeze to clean up. We just wipe down the mattress and voila! Nothing seeps through the mattress or stains the mattress. We love not having to deal with a mattress pad. The waterproof feature of our Naturepedic mattress such a huge plus! More so than we could have ever even imagined. If you’re shopping for a crib mattress, keep in mind not all Naturepedic crib mattresses are waterproof!
The least favorite thing about our Naturepedic crib mattress is how difficult it is to change the sheets. This is due to the weight of the mattress combined with the snugness of the mattress in the crib. For safe sleep, crib mattresses need to be snug in the crib, so obviously there’s nothing that can (or should) be done about this. It’s the weight of the mattress that makes the task of changing sheets a little more difficult. Now granted, I have a more difficult time than my husband, who has stronger arms than I do! And it’s not that I can’t change the sheets due to how heavy the mattress is, because I can, it’s just not my favorite task! But this does bring me to our next point….
No, we would not buy our Naturepedic Cotton Classic 150 Coils Crib Mattress again (if we had a re-do).
Instead, we would opt for the Naturepedic Lightweight Organic Cotton Classic Crib Mattress.
As mentioned earlier, price was a major decision factor when we decided to get our crib mattress and our biggest gripe is how difficult changing the sheets are due to its weight.
We didn’t know it at the time, but for the same price we paid for our mattress (the Naturepedic Cotton Classic 150 Coils), we could have gotten the Lightweight Organic Cotton Classic Crib Mattress. The lightweight mattresses don’t contain traditional mattress coils. Instead, the mattress is made with layers of organic cotton batting. Because of this, the lightweight Naturepedic mattresses are almost 10 pounds lighter than the coiled crib mattresses.
Here’s some frequently asked questions we get about our Naturepedic crib mattress:
Yes! Our Naturepedic mattress fits perfectly in the Sniglar crib from Ikea. Now the fit is snug – but this is how it should be for the sake of safety.
For some Naturepedic mattresses, you would need a mattress protector, as not all are waterproof. But the Cotton Classic 150 Coils mattress is waterproof, so no mattress protector needed! In fact, we recommend not getting a mattress protector for this mattress, as it would add bulk to the mattress and make changing sheets difficult.
You do not need special sheets for the Naturepedic crib mattresses. They are the size of standard crib mattresses.
All crib sheets we have tried fit very snug on the mattress, but this is how it should be for safe sleep.
Now, with that being said, there are sheets that we’ve found are easier to put on and take off. Look for crib sheets with stretch – like 100% organic jersey cotton.
